His Holiness Patriarch Kirill about Ukraine
The Russian Orthodox Church considers nowadays Russia, Ukraine and Belarus to be the unified whole, in spite of the modern political borders. Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill made a statement thereof.
“We regard Kyiv as the southern capital of the Russian Orthodoxy. It is from there that the tradition common for the entire East Slavonic civilization originated. And today, as never before, the orthodox people of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus realize the importance of spiritual reunification of the historical Rus, divided by political borders”, he said in the interview to “Izvestia” newspaper.
“The situation in Ukraine is really complex first of all because the schism there is based on the political calculations, desire of some activists to use the Church and the people’s faith to their own purposes, having nothing in common with the actual Christian purposes. This is a further proof of how careful the political leaders should be when dealing with religious issues. And how dangerous it is when someone tries to use the “Church card” to the political purposes”, noted the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church.
